In just a few months, on June 2, 2018, the Life Ball will celebrate its 25th anniversary and will once again take place in and in front of Vienna City Hall. Always a dazzling hybrid between message and entertainment, Life Ball has established itself as a festival of life. It represents a cosmopolitan Austria and reaches an increasingly international audience. The tension between Austrian qualities, with which the Life Ball is closely connected, and international broad impact is also embodied in the film The Sound of Music (1965). Therefore, deliberately referencing Austria, the touching story of the von Trapp family will be the anniversary’s leitmotif. The Sound of Music is considered one of the most successful musical films ever released. In the movie, Austria is seen through a joyful Hollywood lens. The musical’s life-affirming view is a creative framework for the upcoming Life Ball and Style Bible.
Life Ball Family
One crucial principle applies to the design of the outfits for Life Ball 2018: The cinematic, sometimes over-coated, but also confident view of Austria and its customs should be in the foreground of your styles. A Dirndl dress alone is not a style but an excuse. Styles that approach the subject from an overly romanticized perspective, or orientate themselves on the symbolism of that film’s approaching danger of Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany, as well as military uniforms of any kind are expressly prohibited.
Following the outfit itself, it’s the extravagant headdresses as well as glamorous hair styling and make-up that are the most important elements of the Life Ball styling. Outfits with red ribbons or creative add-ons that are considered a symbol for safer sex receive a bonus from the Style Police. Further information is available at www.stylebible.org.
Guests who intentionally insult or hurt other peoples’ feelings with their styling – e.g. by using religious or political symbols – will be denied access to the Life Ball. Furthermore, access will be denied to those wearing jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, or any other kind of casual clothing. The extravagant costumes should once again add to the special flair and aesthetic lushness of the Life Ball and become creative statements in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This is why the Life Ball 2017 has allocated 100 tickets for those Life Ball guests willing to make an extra special effort.
