University of Vienna
The scientific discourse on homosexuality at the University of Vienna originated in the 19th century, although for a long time research focused exclusively on male homosexuality. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that women were admitted to the University of Vienna. With regard to the discourse on homosexuality, however, little changed until the 1980s: theories of male homosexuality were applied analogously to female homosexuality. Historically, law and medicine, especially their branches of sexual science and psychology, were the central disciplines dealing with homosexuality. Today, cultural studies is at the forefront of the promotion and application of queer theories.
Today, the University of Vienna presents itself in a different light. In the meantime, there are numerous courses in which homosexuality, queer theory or queer art are treated under emancipatory aspects.
